Any understanding of the human must start from the bottom up, not from the top down. That means biology, not metaphysics. In THOUGHTS ABOUT LIFE, human psychology is traced down to its roots in the organic life of the body. As with the processes of the body, so the processes of the mind are driven by the energetic of need. All behavior is attempts to satisfy need. The basic human psychological needs are for pleasure, joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment. In the human, Life is personalized and aware of itself. The human self, however, is not static but dynamic, not an entity but a process. The sense-of-self, a seeming identity continuous through time, has no substance or essence; it is merely the manifestation of the process at one time or another. The sense-of-self causes dualistic thinking, such as mind-versus-body and the-self-versus-others. Relations with others are mostly instances of Love-versus-Strife. Sex is one arena of that dualism of behavior. THOUGHTS ABOUT LIFE proceeds and ascends from the biological organic to the psychological idiosyncratic to the morally valuative. The human is a moral animal that must strive for the wholesomeness of good against the pathology of evil. Morality is linked with meaning, goodness with truth. The mind becomes philosophical. The intellectual quest for a meaning of Life is the hunger of the mind. Once again, need is the driver. Philosophy is wholly psychological. "The human is the valuating animal,--a great distinction from the rest of the creatures of Nature... Investing life with meaning and value is the ultimate creative act." Even as the pathological in the human must be recognized, so too must the aspiration for fulfillment, the summum bonum of human life.
